19 things I am grateful for at 19.

IMG_6627In a life that a lot of us have, its hard to remember what we are grateful for and how far we have come. It’s easy to get lost in our own thoughts and in our busy lives of work, home and the internet. These are the 19 things I am grateful for at 19.

  1. I am grateful for having a loving family and group of friends. They are the support group that are always by my side, and are there to put me straight when I am in the wrong. Even though I may not always be happy with being told I am wrong, I appreciate the opportunity of righting my wrongs. I am very lucky to have a supportive circle around me.
  2. I am grateful for having a roof over my head. Last surveyed by the UN in 2005, it is estimated that 100 million people were homeless, with 1.6 billion lacking adequate housing. With so many people lacking housing, I am grateful for having a house to go home to, and a flat to live at university in.
  3. I am grateful for having a job. As much as it is a part time job and its to earn some money and it’s not ideal, I am thankful for the opportunity to be able to make my own money and spend it in the way that I want.
  4. I am grateful for having an education. 58 million children around the world don’t have an education, and I am thankful for being fortunate enough to have an opportunity to learn and to thrive, as well as being able to study languages at university and do what I have always wanted to do.
  5. I am grateful for opportunity. Opportunities are all around us, yet some of us cannot take them or are given them in the first place. I am grateful for having the opportunity to move abroad, to live freely and away from war in safety.
  6. I am grateful for the opportunity to travel. A lot of people do not have the time or the opportunity to do this either, but I am grateful for being able to save and have the opportunity to explore different places and different cultures with the people I love.
  7. I am grateful for having good health, and free healthcare. Although my health may not always be great, I am grateful to receive free healthcare and opportunities to go to the doctors to figure out if anything is wrong.
  8. I am grateful for having money to spend. Although some of my money has to go towards necessities and not for things that I want, I am grateful that I have it, and be able to somewhat provide for myself.
  9. I am grateful for food and water. 11% of our planet goes to bed hungry, which is approximately 815 million of us. Not everybody has the access to this too, which is despicable. As much food as we waste and throw away, we should still be thankful for having the opportunity to be able be full and be fortunate enough to throw food away.
  10. I am grateful for the technology that I have. It makes life easier and having everything on my fingertips- contacting relatives, meeting new people or sharing my own life with others.
  11. I am grateful for traditions. Being able to celebrate Christmas, new year and my birthday. I am grateful for being foreign and being able to share my traditions with others around me to make them aware of my culture, and be able to celebrate differently.
  12. I am grateful for having books. No matter what they are- fiction or non-fiction. Its nice to get away to another world or another time and learn about different figures, as well as extend my knowledge and make myself more aware of the things happening around me.
  13. I am grateful for the seasons. Each season is special in its own way, and it’s the ending of one chapter and the start of the next. As much as the heat of the summer makes me sweat and feel gross, I am thankful for being warm and having an opportunity to have a summer where I can work and relax before going back to university.
  14. I am grateful for sunsets. The end of the day signals a bad day to end, or a good one to continue the next. It’s the most calming ending to a day, a slow descent of the sun over the other side.
  15. I am grateful for my other half. As much as I know that I am a handful, I am forever grateful for having the opportunity to love someone and share my day to day life with them, as well as be loved.
  16. I am grateful for having alone time. This gives me the time to work and be creative, as well as reflect on the day and get my head straight for the following.
  17. I am grateful for my emotions and being able to show them. I am grateful for being able to express myself and how I feel without being judged or suppressed.
  18. I am grateful for having choice. Not everyone has choice, and at this day and age it seems almost impossible that people do not have a choice in what they wear or what they say, as we have pushed so far forward in fields like technology and science, yet some of us still don’t have the opportunity to voice ourselves.
  19. I am grateful for my mistakes. As much as at the time it seems like the worst thing in the world, my mistakes have shaped me as a person and put me in the place I am today. I’m glad I have things to regret and remember as it has made me grow as a person, and not make the same mistakes again.
